So, I’ve got a problem. If there’s one thing I hate about scenebuilding in Garry’s Mod, it’s that the game (as well as any mounted content or addons) have a tendency to include a model you never knew existed. Go fish around in the "Games > All" section of your spawn menu for a good half-hour, and I guarantee you’ll find something that makes you think "I had no idea I even had this!"

My ridiculously meticulous solution is to attempt to create a catalogue of everything I have, and let me tell you: the base game alone, no mounts or addons, has well over a hundred models easily; add in your other stuff, and that number jumps into the thousands very fast.

TheGamerSeal, I dont, i live in a perpetual state of "oh wow, i didnt know i had this". Everytime i do, i move it to a spawnlist based on what the prop is or take note of where it came from.

And my tip for you, is use the search function more. And a trick is to not complete the word of what you are looking. Say, you want to search things made out of leather. then you type "leath" instead, or go further by just "leat". Some people dont name their props correctly so this helps for typos

DrSchootz, That worked for a time, I’ll admit, but I’m getting to a point where I want to know what I have beforehand. I don’t seem to have this ability to just KNOW exactly what I want to use as perfectly nailed down as I’d like it to be, so I often find most of my time being wasted on browsing through the same endless lists again and again before anything (IF ANYTHING) actually clicks.

TheGamerSeal, Well a good trick is to always use references. Always. When building rooms i often just walk around my house for what to place and where to put it. Sometimes i browse movie scenes, porn, etc. Even room descriptions from a book is enough, which i recall using from Tom Clancy’s novel Support and Defend.

Not that I’m complaining by any means, because Evil-Ash’s Chell is one of my favorite models, but are there other versions of her that have more clothing options? This was a hastily thrown together scene. The blood is actually mine because I have LambdaPlayers on the map and one of them got into the place and shot me and I didn’t have the patience to clean it (makes for a good torture dungeon look anyway, though).

You got the shoulders right, thats neat. When i want to pose arms above the shoulder, theyre the hardest for me to get right. The specific way they twist makes it so if you do it wrong, the skin warps and breaks in weird ways

TheGamerSeal, Use lamps. It’s agood pose but to me it looks like you’ve only posed your ragdoll and only have the lighting from the map. With lamps and lights it will make your scene alot better. Just one lamp makes a world of difference. I use alot of them in my scenes.

DrSchootz, Anyway, if you’re looking for a shoulders tip, my method is to first spawn a Ragdoll in a cardinal direction (0°, 90°, 180°, or 270° - non-cardinal positioning can be done once the pose and anything touching, not just bonemerged, to the character, like chains or chairs, is finished) and [SHIFT] with Ragdoll Mover to see the skeleton nodes and determine whether the clavicles are physical bones are not. If they are physical, rotate the clavicle, upper arm, and forearm backwards 30°; otherwise, rotate the upper arm and forearm 45°.

DrSchootz, Then, if it’s currently enabled, temporarily disable the relative angle wheel so you can adjust the arms on the map axis instead of the model’s.Once your model is posed the way you want, you can safely re-enable the localized angle rotations and rotate the entire model in any orientation you choose.

I tried applying a lamp to Chell’s predicament, but the hair hanging over her face is translucent for some reason and began to fade when any lamplight hit her; on the other hand, I used a light post-picture and this wasn’t a problem, so I’m guessing it has something to do with lamps actually projecting a beam whereas lights don’t. I’d appreciate the clarification. And... damn this 500 character limit! XD

TheGamerSeal, well you asked for thoughts :)! you need both lamps and lights. Lamps cast shadows and lights do not. And a dark map as well (or an addon that makes the light on the map go dark)

DrSchootz, Try r_projectedtexture_filter 0.1 or 0.2. Or r_flashlightdepthres 4096 in the console commands. Will improve the shadows, but depending on the light soures you are using.

Rastifan, I do use 0.2, that and depthbias_shadowmap 0.00001, mat_slopescaledepthbias_shadowmap 2. As for the light source i was using Advanced Light Entities. As for the shadows, im getting conflicting messages here since ive always thought a dark area with a single light source would have a very thick and nearly opaque shadow (i took reference pictures of myself and my office’s car park for reference lmao)
